Pinnell-Long House extension & renovation
Melbourne, Australia
Modest from the street, this reimagined California Bungalow in Melbourne’s northern suburbs has been transformed into a light-filled family home with seamless indoor-outdoor connections.
The original house, lacking heritage protection, was carefully preserved, with a weatherboard extension removed due to poor layout and ceiling heights. The new addition is solid brick, opening to a series of courtyards that maximize the site's potential. The design emphasizes material quality, with exposed brickwork blending inside and out, and tall double brick walls with timber infills. A flat roof accommodates solar panels and allows for future expansion.
The home’s layout extends the original hallway, creating a central spine around which the dining, living, and kitchen areas are arranged. North-facing rooms feature 3-meter ceilings for optimal light. Timber detailing defines spaces like the dining room, kitchen, and ensuite, adding warmth and intimacy.
The main bedroom, positioned to the northeast, offers privacy. Courtyards connect various zones, including a decked west courtyard for outdoor dining and a private east deck leading from the main bedroom to the rear garden. Operable glazing throughout the home enhances the flow between indoor and outdoor living.
