Daylesford Extension & Renovation
Victoria, Australia
This 1940s timber house in Daylesford underwent a thoughtful renovation and extension on a modest budget, transforming it into a modern country retreat. Designed for a couple looking to settle permanently and host guests, the original structure was reworked, with a contemporary rear wing added for extra space.
The home is oriented southward, featuring a raked ceiling and highlight celestial windows that invite abundant northern light. The open-plan pavilion layout includes a living area at one end and a kitchen at the other. The original house was also carefully updated, converting the former living room into a guest bedroom with an ensuite, while preserving charming 1940s details like the art deco-style brick fireplace and intricate plaster ceilings.
To keep costs low, timber framing and recycled materials, such as a reclaimed brick wall in the living room, were used. Inexpensive finishes like laminate cabinetry in the kitchen helped further reduce expenses. With an additional 60 square metres, the total footprint is a comfortable 160 square metres, making the home both spacious and affordable.
