Leura Lane Residence
Victoria, Australia
This innovative project serves as a prototype for a sustainable modular housing system tailored for rural properties. The Leura Lane residence represents the two-bedroom variation, featuring two distinct pavilions—one housing the carport and storage areas, the other containing the primary living spaces. This separation allows for flexible orientation: the carport can face the street while the living areas are positioned to capture northern sunlight or scenic views.
Designed with a streamlined linear layout, the home places shared living areas at one end, centralizes the entryway and utility zones, and locates bedrooms at the opposite end for privacy. This configuration offers scalability, making it easy to extend the home with additional bedrooms, bathrooms, or living zones as needed.
Energy efficiency is a core principle of the design. The home achieves an impressive 8.2-star energy rating by leveraging passive solar design, commonly available building materials, and conventional construction techniques—making it both eco-conscious and cost-effective.
Set on a semi-rural site rich with native vegetation, the home’s materials were carefully selected to complement its natural surroundings. A minimalist, earthy palette is used throughout, with terrazzo tiling underfoot and native Australian hardwoods bringing warmth to the interiors. The exterior is clad in durable spotted gum timber, which will naturally age to a silvery-grey finish, blending beautifully into the landscape over time.
